About the Elements
Do any of these expressions sound familiar to you? "She's so
down-to-earth." "He has such a fiery temper."
"She's a real airhead!" You've probably used them dozens of times
to describe people that you know. The elements of earth, fire, water and air
are as old as time, and they've worked their way into our language, our
history and even our science.
The ancient Greeks, among other early cultures, divided all of life into
four categories. Everything that existed was said to be composed of one of
the four elements: fire, air, earth or water. Early astrologers, who
functioned both as mystical forecasters as well as scientific astronomers,
adapted these four elements into their interpretation of the zodiac. Maybe
you've heard someone say, "I'm a water sign," and wondered what it meant.
The twelve sun signs (Virgo, Scorpio, Aries, etc.) are divided into four
groups by element. For instance, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are all water
signs.
Signs of the same element tend to get along well. If you're a Cancer,
chances are that you will have a lot of friends and lovers throughout your
life who are born under the water signs of Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces. A
large number of married couples also share the same element. Elizabeth
Taylor, a Pisces, was married two times to fellow actor Richard Burton, who
was a Scorpio. There is always an intense pull between people who share the
same element.
What does this mean in the area of love? Should you choose a partner of the
same element to settle down with? Not necessarily. But it is amazing, how,
if you walk into a room, you will automatically feel the most comfortable
and at ease with people who share your same element. Should they all become
lovers? Well, that's up to you! But it should be easy to establish
friendships with those folks since you relate to life in a similar way.
Here's a simple exercise to help illustrate the compatibility of people who
share the same astrological element. First, identify from the list below
which element your sign falls under.
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius – Fire
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn – Earth
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius – Air
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces – Water
Now that you know which element you are, take a mental inventory of the
astrological signs of past lovers. Did any of them share your same element?
How did a relationship with them feel? Weren't there a lot of times during
that relationship when the two of you seemed especially attuned to each
other, reading each other's minds, anticipating each other's feelings and
reactions? Those qualities are common with people who share the same
element. This can make a relationship intensely intimate, and can make sex
with that person almost eerily psychic, as your partner can anticipate what
you want and what you enjoy.
Many of us have been lovers with people who are of a different element than
we are. Sometimes these types of relationship can prove a real challenge.
Usually, when you are intimate with someone of an opposite element,
something about them just rubs you the wrong way. It's easy to find all the
things that are "wrong" with that person, even though, in the final
analysis, they may just have an energy or personality with a different
rhythm from yours.
